The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team lost to Wilson College, 12-10, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game on Wednesday afternoon.
Wilson (3-7, 1-6 NEAC) got its first conference win of the season as Jami DeVanie led the Phoenix with six goals.
Freshman
Victoria Brady scored four goals; her third hat trick of the season, while
Nicole Hayes and
Danielle Savoni each netted two goals for Abington.
Abington struggled on both draw controls and the ground ball battles and could only accomplish 2-of-5 free position shots, while Wilson completed 3-of-4 of the opportunities.
The Lady Lions, 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the NEAC Conference, struggled to maintain ball possession throughout the first half as teams came out aggressive at the start of the game, matching goal for goal as the score held at five goals apiece at half time.
Brady opened the second stanza with two back-to-back goals to give Abington the lead for the second time in the game. However, the lead did not last long as Wilson immediately jumped out to a 9-7 lead before
Kirsten Quinn dodged four defenders before finding the back of the net, to trail by one.
With ten minutes remaining in the game, Abington struggled to keep the ball on the offensive side, burning precious time off the clock. Finally on a forced turnover, Abington patiently eased its way closer to the lead as Brady scored her fourth goal of the night on a Free Position Shot, as Abington trailed by just two goals.
Unfortunately it was not enough, as Wilson held off the Lady Lions in the final minutes for its third win of the season.
Abington will wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend, traveling to Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, April 21
st to take on the Mavericks of Medaille College before heading east on the New York State Thruway to wrap up the season on Sunday, April 22
nd against the SUNY IT Wildcats.
