Softball Splits with Gallaudet

Penn State Abington softball team split against Gallaudet University on Tuesday afternoon. Abington (12-20, 8-12 NEAC) dropped a 21-7 loss in the first game, before rebounding with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
 
Game 1 – Gallaudet 21, Abington 7 (5 innings)
 
The Bison's (8-26, 6-14 NEAC) used a 13-run first inning before Mariellen Medernach knocked the ball out of the park to post a run on the board for Abington.
 
Gallaudet kept the offense at bay; limiting the Lady Lions to just seven total runs before racking up eight more runs in the next four innings before the game was called due to the mercy rule.
 
Rebecca Patenaude went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, as Krysten Boyd was perfect, 3-for-3 with an RBI.
 
 
Game 2 – Abington 4, Gallaudet 3
 
The second game was a different tale, as both teams were aggressive on defense, limiting each other to just four hits throughout the game.
 
Melissa Kulp pitched a five-inning no-hitter for Abington before allowing a hit in the sixth.
 
Gallaudet scored three runs in the sixth for the lead before Abington rallied back in the final inning of the game.
 
With the bases loaded, Christina Rodriguez then advanced to first after being hit by the pitch, rotating all runners on bases for the first run. Medernach then walked, advancing the bases once again for the second score. Trish Watson hit a walkoff single with an error by the Gallaudet shortstop to score both Rodriguez and Jalisa Clarke for the 4-3 win.
 
The Lady Lions will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Cedar Crest College for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
