Penn State Abington Lady Lions softball lost both games in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader against Penn State Berks this afternoon. Despite the windy conditions, both teams duked it out in an exciting matchup.
Game 1: Abington 3, Berks 6
Pitching was strong early on for Penn State Abington as
Tiffany Sipler started on the mound and allowed just two hits in three innings, recording three strikeouts. Sipler finished the game with five total strikeouts for the day.
Down by two runs in the bottom of the 5
th, Abington's bats came to life.
Krysten Boyd singled to get on base as
Jalisa Clarke walked on the next order. Both Boyd and Clarke advanced on a wild pitch to give Abington a scoring edge.
Melissa Kulp singled through the left side to advance Boyd and Clarke safely at home. Kulp would end up scoring herself, putting Abington within reach, 4-3.
Berks pulled away with the game in the top of the 6
th as they tacked on two more runs. Abington was unable to find their rhythm in the stretch.
Game 2: Abington 2, Berks 5
In the second game Berks came out swinging. They got on the board in the first inning scoring two runs before adding an additional run in the second to extend the lead 3-0.
Abington began to knock on the door, scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Junior
Mariellen Medernach got on base with a walk to start the inning. She would then advance to third off of a
Sam Kidd single. Kidd stole second base in order to put more pressure on Berks. Sophomore
Christina Rodriguez posted an RBI single, plating Medernach at home to put Abington on the board with a run, trailing 3-1. Kidd later added the second run to cut the deficit to one. Abington could not equalize its opportunity with bases loaded.
Berks scored two additional runs in the top of the fifth; which proved to be the last runs to be recorded by either side as Berks held on for the 5-2 victory.
Abington will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11th when it host the NEAC Conference opponent Wilson College in a doubleheader.
