BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team gave Bryn Mawr College all it could handle in a season-opening 15-3 loss Friday at the Applebee Field.
The Lady Lions came out firing, tallying 14 shots in the first half. Sophomores
Tori Kimberly, Kate Schlack, and
Nichole Hayes each scored a goal for Abington.
Abington was strong on the defensive end as well including goalkeeper
Sarah Snyder-Kamen, who made seven stops and allowed nine goals in the first session of play.
The Owls went on a 4-0 scoring run and had all the momentum, before Kimberly tallied the first goal of the season for Abington at the 11:24 mark. Bryn Mawr went on to score five more before Schlack scored the second goal off a feed by Kimberly to end the half 9-2,
The Owls entered halftime on a 5-0 scoring run until Hayes tallied her first goal of the season and the third of the game for Abington at the 14:37 mark. However, Bryn Mawr responded with a goal of its own ninety seconds later. The Lady Lions continued to press for the remainder of the game but had difficulty establishing possession as Bryn Mawr shifted its attention to holding the ball in the final
minutes and held on for their first win of the season.
Abington out hustled Bryn Mawr on the draw 12-8, with Hayes winning eight of them and won the ground ball battle 21-16 as Kimberly led the squad with four. However foul trouble was what hindered Abington after being called 26 times throughout the game, compared to Bryn Mawr's 12.
Despite not getting the result it wanted, head coach
Noelle Powell was encouraged by the team's performance and believes it will be a learning experience for the team to finish the games strong.
Abington will return to the field on Wednesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. as it travels to Gwynedd-Mercy College.
