Softball Split Doubleheader Against SUNY Canton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split with the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton earlier this afternoon in a sunny but windy doubleheader. The Lady Lions won the first game by a score of 9-1 before dropping the second game 10-6.

Abington went into today's game looking to extend its four-game winning streak, however it was the 'Roos who got on the board first in the top of second inning on a RBI single by Jessica Rhodes. After Allie Gibson's sacrifice bunt to push Andrea Rogers over to third, Rhodes stepped up and found the gap at second to bring Rogers home for the first and only run of the game for SUNY Canton.

With bases loaded on a fielder's choice, walk, and single, Abington responded quickly in the bottom of the second as Alyssa Virginio collected a 2 RBI single through the middle of second to round Cara Fiala and Sam Kidd  home from second for the 2-1 lead.

The scoring spree didn't end there for the Abington as four runs were tallied in the bottom of the third. Michaela Drogalis started the rally with an RBI double, followed by Nicole Battaglio's ground out to first, bringing Trish Watson home from third. With two outs, Fiala then doubled out to second base for an RBI from Drogalis before Ashley Quenzer doubled out to right field to drive in two runs from Fiala and Kidd to make it a 7-1 ballgame.

Canton strived to get runners on board in the next three innings but Drogalis, who pitched all seven innings for Abington, was on a roll, forcing six ground outs and striking out a batter in the process.

The Lady Lions tallied the two runs in the sixth inning as Shelia O'Hagan slid across home plate on an error by Caton's catcher, Hallie Fenti, before Watson also scored the winning run on an error by Fenti to end the game on the eight-run rule.  The victory extend Abington's winning streak to five.
 -----
Game two proved that anything can happen in just one turnaround, and SUNY Canton proved just that in the first inning. The 'Roos managed to fluster Drogalis, walking the first three batters to load the bases. Rogers then found the sweet spot and knocked the ball out of the park for a grand slam to put SUNY Canton up 4-0, and it didn't end there. Canton managed to tack on two additional runs in the top of second as Rogers, stepping up in the clutch moment once again, placed the ball in between the outfield gaps for a 2 RBI single with the board in favor of Canton, 6-0.

Abington managed to post a run on the board in the third inning as Fiala scored the run by Virginio's single. The 'Roos responded back on the next turn in the top of fourth with two additional runs.

The Lady Lions knew they needed a quick comeback of some sort and the bats began to come to life in the next three innings. O'Hagan scored the second run of the game unearned, beating the throw to home before Battaglio posted an RBI single for the Lady Lions in the fourth. Then the errors continued to haunt SUNY Canton as the Lady Lions scored two more unearned runs in the bottom of fifth, before Kidd grounded out to second to bring Drogalis safely home in the sixth inning to put the Lady Lions within reach, trailing by just two runs heading into the seventh.

SUNY Canton settled down at bat and managed to cushion their lead, scoring a run unearned and a second run on a sacrificed fly to make it a 10-6 ballgame. Abington had one last attempt to push a rally, however Canton's pitcher, Tina DeLuca flustered the final four batters for the 'Roos win.

The Lady Lions move to 5-3 with the split on the day, and have a chance to improve their record even more on Tuesday, March 26th with a doubleheader at Arcadia University.  Game one is set to start at 3 p.m.
