Women's Lacrosse Falls at Lancaster Bible, 14-11

LANCASTER, Pa. – Avery Winn recorded a season best with five goals, but the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team was unable to keep pace and fell to Lancaster Bible College, 14-11 late Wednesday afternoon.

Abington (0-12, 0-5 NEAC) got on board early after Nichole Hayes scored the first goal of the game at the 27:38 mark, off a feed by Melanie Brown. Lancaster (2-10, 1-4 NEAC) responded a minute late to tie up the game only to watch Winn score her first goal of the game to put Abington ahead once again. Once again, Lancaster responded with a pair of goals before Abington went on a three- goal run by Hayes, Tori Kimberly, and Winn to retake the 5-3 lead with 18:24 to play.

The first stanza continued to become more aggressive as Lancaster tied up the game on a pair of goals before both teams traded a pair of goals with Hayes and Brown scoring their second goal in the half for Abington to end the half tied at seven points apiece at halftime.

The Nittany Lions opened the second half with a goal by Winn before Lancaster answered back with two goals in a span of two minutes for the 9-8 lead. Scores by Winn and Brown at the 18:20 and 17:35 marks, respectively, brought Abington within one at 10-9. However, the Chargers opened a four-goal run and held the Abington scoreless for seven minutes before Winn tallied her fifth and final goal for Abington at the 4:03 mark as Lancaster added an insurance goal and deflected Abington's attack in the final minutes of the contest for the victory.

Abington showed difficulty clearing the ball into the attacking third, going just 8-of-15 on clear attempts. The Nittany Lions also turned it over 12 times in the second half and finished with 19 for the game. Abington managed to score 3-of-9 free position shots compared to Lancaster's 1-of-5.

Netminder Sandy Cao came up with a game-high 19 saves on the day for the Nittany Lions, while Katelyn Kelly forced two caused turnovers with two ground balls.  Nichole Hayes came up with a hat-trick on seven shots and came up with three draw controls, while Brown tallied two goals.

Abington returns to conference play with a matchup against the Screaming Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, April 20th at Germantown Academy Sisters Field. The first draw is set for 4 p.m.
