Box Score ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team rallied back late into the game but fell short to Medialle College, 22-15, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder
Nichole Hayes led the squad with eight points on seven goals and an assist while fellow classmate
Tori Kimberly collected seven points on six goals and an assist along with five ground balls on the day.
Avery Winn was responsible for the two goals and collected an assist for the Nittany Lions.
Medialle College (9-3, 6-2 NEAC) jumped ahead with a 3-0 lead in a span of three minutes of the opening draw before Hayes found the back of the net to put a point on the board for the Nittany Lions with 27:25 to play. The Mavericks went on to score back to back goals for the 5-1 lead as Kimberly tallied the second goal, however Medialle would quickly respond back with a pair of goals to extend the lead 7-2 with 20:03 remaining, forcing Abington to take a timeout.
The Nittany Lions (2-13, 2-6 NEAC) quickly recovered their momentum, scoring three consecutive goals with a pair from Hayes while
Avery Winn tallied the second goal in between, cutting the deficit to two. However, Medialle would only respond back with a trio of goals themselves before Kimberly stopped the barrage, scoring a pair of goals for Abington, now trailing 10-7 with 10:03 to play. Medialle would only make it worse in the final minutes, scoring four unanswered goals to jump ahead 14-7 at the half.
The Mavericks charged out of the gate scoring three additional goals to open the second half before Abington managed to score twice by Kimberly and Winn to make it 17-9 with 25:40 on the clock.
After both teams traded goals, Medille sparked a four goal run to extend the margin to 12 with 17:14 to play. Abington refused to give up and pushed its final rally, scoring five unanswered goals in the next 16 minutes, but it was too late to catch up as the Nittany Lions fell short with the score flashing 22-15 in favor of the Mavericks.
Sandy Cao came up with 10 saves in the net for the Nittany Lions, while Kimberly came up with six draw controls and forced two of the six caused turnovers for Abington.
The Nittany Lions will wrap up the 2013 campaign tomorrow on Senior Day as they continue conference play against SUNYIT. The first draw is set for 4 p.m.
