Women’s Lacrosse Closes Out Season with 12-6 Loss on Senior Day

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team wrapped up their season with a tough 12-6 loss to SUNYIT on Senior Day at sun-drenched Sisters Field on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Nichole Hayes closed out her brilliant career, tallying two goals. She completed her career with 108 points, 85 goals and 23 assists, all career records at Abington. Hayes will transfer to Penn State University next year to complete her degree in health and human development.

Sophomore Avery Winn posted a hat-trick, while classmate Tori Kimberly added a goal for the Nittany Lions. Sandy Cao came up with five save in between the pipes.

Trailing 2-0 after 13 minutes of play, Kimberly managed to find the back of the net at the 17:05 mark to put Abington on the board. SUNYIT would only respond with four unanswered goals before Winn tallied the second goal with just 58 seconds remaining in the first half.

At halftime, Senior Melanie Brown, the criminal justice major, was recognized as she completed her career with four points, three goals and an assist.

Trailing 6-2 after the half, Abington made a furious comeback in the second half with a pair of goals from Hayes to trail 6-4 at the 26:37 mark. SUNYIT answered back with a goal before Winn tallied her second goal of the game a minute later. However, SUNYIT was patient with the ball on offense, burning off precious time off the clock, 11 minutes to be exact, and managed to score five unanswered goals in the frame to extend the lead 12-5 with 6:05 to play. Winn then tallied the final goal of the regular season for Abington at the 4:19 mark as SUNYIT held on to the ball and drained out the clock for the win.

Shots were 26-20 in favor of SUNYIT. The Nittany Lions grabbed seven ground balls to nine for the Wildcats. The Nittany Lions were 12-for-13 on clearing attempts and were 3-for-5 on free position attempts. SUNYIT was 15-for-16 on clears and went 2-for-4 on free position attempts.

Abington closes out the 2013 campaign with a 2-17 record and a 2-7 NEAC record.
