Box Score ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team dropped a North Eastern Athletic Conference game to Cazenovia College, 24-13, Saturday afternoon.
Tori Kimberly and
Nichole Hayes led the Nittany Lions with five points off four goals and an assist and three goals and two assists, respectively.
The Nittany Lions dropped to 0-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Wildcats improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Cazenovia scored the first goal of the game in just ten seconds, hoping to make a statement from the get-go. However, Abington managed to bounce back 40 seconds later with a pair of goals by
Katelyn Kelly and Kimberly to take the 2-1 lead for the first time in game. As Cazenovia found the back of the net twice, Abington didn't waste any time as the Nittany Lions scored back-to-back goals by
Avery Winn and
Melanie Brown, who scored her first goal of the season, to retake the 4-3 lead.
The battle for possession continued throughout the first half as Cazenovia tallied three additional goals before Abington's Kimberly drove around the crease and faked the goalkeeper, taking a shot in the air to find the net at the top, tying up the game at six points apiece with 6:34 remaining in the half.
With the clock ticking down under two minutes, Hayes managed to find the back of the net off a pass from behind the goal by Kimberly to tie up the game for the seventh time at eight goals to end the half.
The Nittany Lions opened the second half with a pair of goals from
Kate Schalck and Kimberly before Cazenovia scored four unanswered goals to jump ahead 12-10 with 19:57 remaining in the game. Abington's
Avery Winn managed to find the net to make a one point game, however the Wildcats scored three additional goals to push the lead to 15-11 before Hayes broke the run at the 9:51 mark. However, it was not enough to deter the Wildcats as they exploded on a pair of runs, scoring eight goals to clinch the win. Abington mustered two final goals from Schlack and Kimberly as time expired.
Winn finished with a hat-trick and an assist for four points, while Schlack scored two goals on the day. Netminder,
Sandy Cao came up with nine saves on the day.
Abington trailed in shots (40-26), ground balls (23-21), but had a slight advantage on draw controls (20-19).
The Nittany Lions will continue conference play tomorrow against Morrisville State College at Germantown Academy. The first draw is slated for 4 p.m.
