LANCASTER, Pa. – For the third consecutive year, both the men's and women's cross country squads took home victories for Penn State Abington at the Charger Invitational, hosted by Lancaster Bible, Saturday morning.
The rain did not slow down junior
Alexander Kane (Doylestown, Pa.) as he clinched first-place overall for the third straight year, leading the pack for a new course record of 26:59.4 on the 8-kilometer course, while sophomore
Valerie Santangelo (Abington, Pa.) earned the top spot for the second straight year as she led the women with a personal best course time of 20:52.1 on the 5-kilometer course, finishing 58 seconds ahead of the second place runner.
The Nittany Lions had four runners finishing in the top ten with strong times out of
Nelson Costa Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.), who finished fourth overall with a time of 28:44.1, senior
Nicholas Volpe finishing seventh (29:02.4), and
Billy Donovan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) on his heels for a personal record time of 29:06.8.
Jeremy Castro (Clifton, N.J.) cross the line in 31:13.1 for the 22
nd spot as
Faheem Shah (Philadelphia, Pa.) rounded out the last runner for Abington with a 27
th place finish in 31:47.3 for a personal best time.
Four runners also posted a top ten finish on the women's side for the Blue and White as
Haley Burns (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished fifth in 22:24.2 followed by
Gina Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa.) in seventh for a time of 22:36.8 before
Jenina Santos (Springfield, N.J.) crossed the line in 10
th place (23:01.6).
Kelly Hammond (Philadelphia, Pa.) completed the course in 23:47.1 for the 16
th place spot, while
Jacquelyn Burkhimer rounded out the women's squad in 26:35.8 for the 26
th place finish.
Abington will return to action next Saturday as the men's and women's travel to Gettysburg, Pa. to participate in the Gettysburg Invitational. The race is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
