BRYN ATHYN, Pa.- The Penn Abington men's and women's cross country teams completed the Bryn Athyn College Invitational on a wet and cool Saturday morning.
With Bryn Athyn College being less than ten minutes from Abington's campus, the Abington runners had a home course feel as both the men's and women's team won the event, beating out three other teams: Bryn Athyn College, Lancaster Bible College, and The University of Valley Forge.
Senior
Nicholas Volpe (Southampton, Pa.) finished the 7-kilometer course 15 second behind the top runner for a 2
nd place finish with a time of 23:33. Freshmen
Nelson Costa Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) completed the race with a time of 23:53 and earned a 3rd place finish. Coming in a close 4
th place was
Billy Donovan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) with a time of 24:55.
Crossing the finish line in 9
th was Freshmen
Jeremy Castro (Clifton, N.J.) with a time of 27:07. Rounding out the top 10 was junior
Christopher Pearce (Bensalem, Pa.) with a time of 28:17.
The women's team earned seven out of the top 20 finishes. Sophomore
Valerie Santangelo (Abington, Pa.), took the overall top leader with a time of 21:18, leading the pack with a 6:51 pace. Freshman Hayley Burns (Philadelphia, Pa.) completed the race for a 4
th place finish with a time of 23:18, while junior
Gina Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned a time of 23:46 to finish in 6
th place this morning.
Freshman Jenine Santos (Springfield, N.J.) finished in 7
th place with a time of 23:47, followed by classmate
Kelly Hammond crossing the line in 23:57 for the 8
th spot. Junior
Jacqualyn Horbury (Philadelphia, Pa.) crossed the finish line in 26:04 for the 13
th place spot.
Jacquelyn Burkhimer, a freshman finished the Bryn Athyn College Invitational with a time of 29:18.
Penn State Abington will travel to Lancaster, Pa. next week to participate in the Charger Invitational, hosted by Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, October 11th. The men will start start at 9:00 a.m. followed by the women's race at 10:00 a.m.
