Winn's Six Goals Fall Short in Loss to Hood

Box Score FREDERICK, Md. – Penn State Abington's Avery Winn scored a career-high six goals, but Hood College (4-0) rallied for six straight to turn the tide in a 17-11 Nittany Lions' loss on Tuesday.
 
Four different players scored for Hood over the opening 16 minutes, as the Blazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. From there, the Nittany Lions responded on back-to-back goals from juniors Katelyn Haas and Avery Winn. Both teams managed to find the net once again before Hood scored five unanswered goals to extend the lead to 10-3.
 
Abington refused to prevail and continued battling its way into the game as Winn tallied a pair of goals at the 7:13 mark but Hood would only respond with three consecutive goals to lead 13-6 at the break.
 
Hood would continue its offensive attack, scoring three straight to open the second half. Winn continued to penetrate Hood's line of defense, finding the back of the net at the 15:39 mark before Cindy La tallied her first goal of the season as Abington trailed 16-8.  Despite a tighter defense on Abington's end, Hood managed to sneak one by before scored three consecutive goals, one from Katelyn Kelly and two from Winn on free position shots for the 17-11 score with 10:39 remaining.
 
The Nittany Lions continued to produce numerous shots in the final minutes of the game but they were either deflected or went high and wide as time expired as Hood College handed the Blue and White its third straight loss.
 
Sandy Cao, who started in the cage for Abington, posted 12 saves on the 29 shots faced along with three ground balls. Kelly and Haas each scored two goals in the loss, while Sara Sawick won four draw controls and picked up an assist .
 
Abington return to action on Friday, March 14 in its home opener versus Arcadia University at Hatboro-Horsham High School. The first draw is slated for noon.
