Women's Lacrosse Falls to Rutgers-Camden, 15-4 in Power Pink Game

Box Score
HORSHAM, Pa. – Tonight's game was all about supporting a member of the lacrosse community as both the Penn State Abington and Rutgers-Camden women's lacrosse teams paired up in the Power Pink game to show support for Johanna Yemm, a former teammate of both head coaches who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer on October 16, 2013, in tonight's contest.

Despite the similarities of pink jerseys on the field tonight, Rutgers-Camden (2-4) came out in the winning end with a 15-4 decision over the Nittany Lions.

Junior midfielder Katelyn Haas posted three points on a pair of goals and an assist for the Blue and White, while teammates Avery Winn and Chasidy McLaurin scored a goal each. Sophomore Sandy Cao played all 60 minutes in goal and came up with nine
saves in the 24 shots faced for the Nittany Lions.

Rutgers-Camden wasted no time on the draw as Brigette Forte scored the first goal of the game for the Scarlet Raptors in just 10 seconds into the game. Twenty seconds later, another goal was scored for Rutgers-Camden, this time by Krystal Valianti, before Winn snuck by two defenders for her first goal of the game on a free-position opportunity to put Abington on the board early.
Abington (0-5) kept in contention for the next six minutes as Haas tallied her two goals to help the Nittany Lions trail 4-3 at the 23:14 mark until Rutgers-Camden broke free and scored nine unanswered goals to extend the lead to 13-3 at the break.

The second half continued in favor of the Scarlet Knights as they scored a pair of goals to start the stanza before McLaurin scored her first goal of the season with 17:04 to play.

Abington had several opportunities in the final minutes, taking six shots in the half but none were able to find the back of the net as time expired.

Cecilia Gross led Rutgers-Camden with a hat-trick and an assist for four points as Holly Cusick scored four goals and Krystal Valianti also tallied a hat-trick for the Scarlet Raptors.

After the game, both teams were able to meet together and support Johanna on the field and embrace one of their own in a small community of lacrosse.

"Lacrosse is not just a sport...it's a way of life that introduces us to everlasting friendships that quickly evolve into a great big family", said Penn State Abington head coach Noelle Powell. " Lacrosse teaches us willpower, grace, strength but most importantly the power of teamwork.  Sharing in this game to honor Jo's fight signifies the bond that is created through our game and how much we truly care about one another. "

The Nittany Lions will return to action next Thursday, March 27 on the road as they take on Gwynedd-Mercy University in a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
