Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener 14-4 at Bryn Mawr

Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2014 season with a trip to Bryn Mawr, Pa. to take on Bryn Mawr College. The Nittany Lions were unable to start the season on a high note, falling to the host Owls 14-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Three players scored for the Blue and White as sophomore Sandy Cao made five saves in goal for Abington.

With the loss, Abington falls to 0-1 to start the 2014 campaign while Bryn Mawr improves to 1-0 with the victory.

The Nittany Lions could not jumpstart their offense in the first half as they notched just two goals to the Owls' nine in the first 30 minutes of play. Bryn Mawr outshot Abington, 16-6, and collected 15, however both teams turned the ball over 16 times in the frame.

Freshman Sara Sawwick scored the first goal of the first half for the Blue and White, netting one at 24:42 to trail 2-1. Less than ten minutes later, junior Kate Schalck scored Abington's second goal and her first of the season at the 15:34 for the 3-2 score, but that would be as close as the Nittany Lions would get. The Owls followed up Schalck's tally with a 10-goal run spanning into the second half.

Junior Avery Winn registered a pair of goals for Abington during the second half to round out the Nittany Lion scoring.

Kathleen Magner led Bryn Mawr with six goals on the afternoon, but five of Magner's teammates also recorded at least a point. Katie Alpert filled in the pipe and came up with seven saves and earned the decision for her first win of the year.

The Nittany Lions will head south next week to seek its first win of the year against against Catholic University on Sunday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
