Avery Winn earned a hat-trick as
Katelyn Haas and
Chasidy McLaurin posted two goals apiece, but the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team was handed an 18-8 loss at Morrisville State College on Sunday afternoon.
McLaurin opened the contest with a quick goal in just 56 seconds of the opening half to put Abington (1-11, 1-5 NEAC) on the board early, however Morrisville (7-5, 4-1 NEAC) would quickly respond with five unanswered goals in the next four minutes for the 5-1 lead.
Abington went cold on offense, scoring only three goals on 12 shots in the first half, two from Winn and the third from McLaurin, and despite holding the Mustangs scoreless for over 10 minutes, the Blue and White could not contain the Mustangs, which scored six additional goals in the first half for the 10-4 lead at the break.
The Mustangs opened the second half with a four-goal shooting spree to extend the lead, 15-4. Abington's offense came to life as Haas tallied the Blue and White's fifth goal of the game off a free-position attempt before Morrisville would just quickly rebound with a point of its own.
The Nittany Lions continued to battle their way back into the game, scoring three more times, only to be matched by Morrisville in between each goals as the Mustangs held on for the 18-8 win.
For the home-standing Mustangs, Shelby Wood led the high powering offense with seven points on five goals and two assists. Morrisville outshot Abington 44-25 and won the battle for ground balls, 31-27.
Haas scooped up five of Abington's 27 ground balls on the day, while
Kaitlin Gossner secured a team-best seven draw controls.
For the Nittany Lions,
Sandy Cao made 17 saves on 35 shots faced in the 60 minutes played.
Abington hosts Wells College on Friday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Hatters Stadium in Hatboro-Horsham.
