Women’s Lacrosse Wins a Thriller in OT Against Wells College, 15-14

Box Score HORSHAM, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team (2-11, 2-4 NEAC) beat Wells College Express (2-6, 2-3 NEAC), 15-14 in overtime. The Nittany Lions were led by junior Avery Winn with nine goals while teammates Chasidy McLaurin posted three goals. Junior midfielder Katelyn Haas added a pair of goals, as Katelyn Kelly contributed the night with a goal in Abington's first and only overtime victory in program history. Sandy Cao played all of regulation and overtime in net for the Nittany Lions, making five key saves to keep her team in the game.

Abington came out battling in the first half as Winn scored the first goal of the game before Wells quickly answered back less than two minutes later to tie the score at 1-1 with 25:46 to play. The Nittany Lions went on to score three more goals until Wells got a goal off a free position shot to make it 5-2 with 13:42 left in the half.

Avery Winn recorded a hat-trick at the 10:30 mark as her team followed through with three goals to lead Wells 8-2 at the 3:57 mark. The Express snuck in one more goal with under a minute left to leave the game at 8-3 at the break as Abington outshot the Express 25-6.

Wells fought back hard in the second half finding the net four times with the scoreboard now reading 8-7 with 21:35 to go on the clock. The Nittany Lions remained resilient as McLaurin and Winn scored back-to-back. The Express got a goal back but Abington would quickly respond from duos Winn and McLaurin once again, as they tallied another pair of goals again, leaving the score 12-8 with 11:08 remaining in the game.

Turnovers plagued both teams throughout the game but it got shaky in the last three minutes as Wells scored three straight before Lexie Roberson slipped by a crowd of Abington defenders before finding the back of the net to tie up the game at 12 all, forcing the game into overtime.

The Express scored the first goal of overtime but Abington quickly responded with back-to-back goals from Winn with 1:31 left in the first extra time. Wells then tied it up at 14 goals with eight seconds left before the teams switched sides. In the second overtime, both teams vied for the ball but Abington managed to retain possession of the ball off a Well's turnover before Haas carried the ball down the field and scored the game winning goal for Blue and White at the 1:33 mark to notch the Nittany Lions' second win of the year.

Aside from the two goals scored, Haas led the team with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers on the night, while sharing the three draw controls with Winn and Kaitlin Gossner. Winn's nine goals ties her for most goals scored in a game.

Tonight's game was played in support of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ), a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children and families fighting pediatric brain tumors by pairing them up with college and high school athletic teams, as the team wore tye dye t-shirts to raise awareness and show support to the cause.

The Nittany Lions get back to work tomorrow on Saturday, April 19 as they host Keuka College at Hatters Stadium. The game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
