NEWVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Abington cross country teams competed at the Dickinson College Invitational, home of the 2014 NCAA Mid-East Regional, on Saturday.
The men's finished 16
th out of 48 teams. Junior
Alexander Kane (Doylestown, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions for the fourth weekend in a row and finished 8
th overall, breaking the Top-10 school record in an 8-kilometer race with a time of 26:21.06. Kane beat out multiple runners from nationally ranked teams, such Division III schools like Dickinson College and Messiah College, along with Division II Shippensburg University and even Division I Bucknell University.
Senior
Nicholas Volpe crossed the line in 86
th place with a personal best time of 28:43.49 and improved to the 4
th spot of the program Top-10 rankings. Freshman Nelson Costa followed suit with a personal best time of 29:28.92 for a 109
th place finish and an 8
th spot in the Top-10 rankings, while
Billy Donovan crossed the line with a personal record of 30:04.79 for the 140
th spot to pick up the 9
th slot on the Top-10 list.
Other Abington finishers include freshmen
Jeremy Castro finishing in 206
th (33:02.67) and
Faheem Shah in 218
th (34:15.80) to round out the runners for the Blue and White.
The women finished 29
th out of 54 teams and were led by sophomore
Valerie Santangelo with a 130
th place finish for a time of 26:54.43. Junior
Gina Montgomery crossed the line in 29:49.45 for the 204
th spot, while freshman
Kelly Hammond was close on her heels for the 209
th place in 30:06.09.
Other finishers include
Jenina Santos in 215
th (30:33.25),
Jacqualyn Horbury with the 249
th spot (33:55.71), and
Jacquelyn Burkhimer with the 263
rd finish (37:55.77).
Abington will return to action next Saturday as the squads travel to Salisbury, Md. to participate in the Don Cathcart Invitational, hosted by Salisbury University. Â The first race will commence at 8:30 a.m.
