Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa.-The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2015 campaign with an 18-13 victory at Bryn Mawr College Saturday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions jumped out to a fast start as
Katelyn Kelly (Springfield, Pa.) would score less than three minutes into the game.
Jessica Watts (Abington, Pa.) would then make it 2-0 Abington at the 24:40 mark of the first half.
Bryn Mawr would fight back and score four unanswered goals to give the Owls a 4-2 lead midway through the first half. Fiona Steele had three of Bryn Mawr's four goals.
Abington would regain the lead at the 9:45 mark as the Nittany Lions scored six unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead. Both
Katelyn Kelly and
Jessica Watts would each score their second goals of the game.
Michalea Mast (Pottstown, Pa.) netted her first two collegiate goals in the first half.
Abington would give up a late goal to Bryn Mawr's Claire Johnson with 1:12 remaining in the the opening 30 minutes. Abington would take an 8-5 lead into half.
The Nittany Lions outshot the Owls 26-8 in the opening 30 minutes. Abington held a 9-5 advantage in draw controls, and caused seven Owl turnovers.
Bryn Mawr would cut Abington's lead to 8-6 just 45 seconds into the second half as Claire Johnson would tally her second goal of the game.
Katelyn Haas (Lower Moreland, Pa.) would answer right back as she scored her second goal of the game extending Abington's lead to 9-6.
Bridget Meade (Willow Grove, Pa.) and
Jessica Watts would score at the 24:12 and 19:02 marks, respectively, to give Abington a 11-7 lead.
Bryn Mawr would battle back as Claire Johnson would score four second half goals for the Owls but it wasn't enough, as the pesky Nittany Lions prevailed.
Katelyn Haas,
Breanne Kradzinski (Philadelphia, Pa.),
Chasidy McLaurin (Philadelphia, Pa.), Katie Schalck (Warminster, Pa.) and
Michalea Mast would round out the scoring for Abington in the second half.
Haas and Mast led Abington in scoring scoring four goals each on the day. Bryn Mawr's Claire Johnson had seven goals in the game to lead all scorers.
Abington outshot Bryn Mawr 45-22 for the game. The Nittany Lions held a 19-14 advantage in draw controls, and caused 11 Owl turnovers. Abington was 4-of-11 on free position shots, while both teams had 17 ground balls.
Abington (1-0, 0-0 NEAC) will return to action this Tuesday, March 3
rd, for their home opener against Hood College. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
