LANGHORNE, PA – The Penn State Abington baseball team earned its eighth consecutive win with a 9-1 victory over Cairn University on Thursday afternoon. Abington improves to 17-7 after the win.Â
Sophomore
Julio Aira IV (Miami Fla.) led the way for the Nittany Lions going 3-of-4 with two runs scored and three RBI's. On the mound
John Matthews (Levittown, PA) picked up the win pitching a complete game. The sophomore only surrendered two hits and one run, while striking out nine batters.
The Nittany Lions held an early 2-0 lead after two innings of action, thanks to RBI's from
Kyle Marshall (Fairless Hills, PA) and
Stevie Stevenson (Westampton, NJ).The Highlanders got on to the board in the bottom half of the second to cut the lead 2-1.
Aira broke open the game in the third inning, driving his pitch to deep left center field for the RBI double. Freshman
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) followed up with a single into right field to drive another two runs past the plate.
The sophomore designated hitter stepped up to the pate in the sixth inning and drove in another run with his Sharpe single to second base to give the Nittany Lions a 7-1 advantage.
In the ninth inning RBI singles from Stevenson and freshman
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) put the game out of reach for the Highlanders.
Abington will be back in action on Saturday for senior day, where the Nittany Lions will honor senior catcher
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.), and host SUNY Cobleskill at 1:00 p.m.
