JENKINTOWN, Pa – Coming off a strong non-conference win, the Penn State Abington baseball team pulled off two wins Saturday afternoon as they returned to competition in the NEAC. The Nittany Lions won the first game 3-1 and the second game 8-0 against SUNY Cobleskill. Abington improved their record to a perfect 9-0 in the conference and 19-7 overall.
Â
During game one, Abington got on the board first during the top of the second inning when Junior
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) reached home plate on a sacrifice fly. The hit also advanced freshman
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) to third base. Woodley would reach home plate moments later when Abington got another sacrifice fly deep into center field.
Â
The Nittany Lions would go on and score one more run to win the game 3-1. Freshman
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) had another strong day pitching as he earned the victory. The freshman is also currently tied for most wins in the conference at the moment.
Â
Before game two, the Penn State Abington athletic department celebrated senior day by honoring Senior
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) for his outstanding career with the baseball program. Mikula is a three year starter for the Nittany Lions. At the plate, he has a total of 64 hits and 30 RBIs to this date for the program.
Â
In game two, Abington would open up the scoring in the first inning after sophomore
Stevie Stevenson (Westampton, NJ) reached home plate off of a wild pitch by Cobleskill. The Nittany Lions would score three more runs in that inning due to the Cobleskill's pitching struggles.
Â
During the top of the 8
th inning, a Cobleskill's player popped up a ball towards their dugout with two outs. Mikula quickly took off his catching mask and made an athletic catch in a difficult position to get the clutch out and end the inning.
Â
At the bottom of the 8
th, junior
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) landed a nice double to left field and drove in a run. Abington would go on and score one more run to seal the 8-0 victory in game two. Freshman
Zach Bregenzer (Hopewell, NJ) was relentless on the mound against Cobleskill as he earned the shutout victory while allowing only two hits in nine innings of work.
Â
Abington will be back in action tomorrow as they host SUNY Poly at 12:00 P.M.
