JENKINTOWN, PA. – Facing off against the No. 6 team in the country, the Penn State Abington baseball team went toe-to-toe with powerhouse program Rowan University and upset the Profs 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions picked up their second win against a nationally ranked opponent, with the last one coming against No. 10 Rowan in 2014. With the win, the Nittany Lions earn their 13
th straight win and improve to 22-7 for the season.
Freshman pitcher
Zach Bregenzer (Hopewell, NJ) stepped into the game in the fifth inning and shut down the Profs with three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.
Abington was first on the board with a sacrifice fly from freshman
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA). Rowan broke out in the third inning with a three run home run to deep left field, giving the visitors a 5-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) chipped away at the lead when he drove a sharp single through the infield to drive in another run.
The Profs had a comfortable 7-2 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, but Abington didn't lose confidence against the nationally ranked powerhouse.
Abington shifted momentum, by taking advantage of multiple fielding errors by the Profs. The Nittany Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the hosts within a run.
In the sixth inning Rowan threatened to score another run, but a phenomenal throw from the outfield to
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) beat the runner to the plate and ended the inning on the tag.
Sophomore
Julio Aira IV (Miami Fla.) tied the game in the sixth inning when he drove home Woodley after his single through the left side.
Abington had all the energy in the seventh inning and the Profs pitcher couldn't handle the pressure. With bases loaded and only one out, McCarty took a pitch to the back and earned a free trip to first base to take the lead. The Profs went to the bullpen with junior
Tyler DiPatri at the plate, but the change didn't faze him and he drove his pitch to drive in another run. The rattled pitcher, hit Aira IV to put the final run across the plate for the Nittany Lions.
The Profs couldn't put a rally together in the eighth and ninth inning, and the Nittany Lions finished the upset.
Abington will be back in action when they host CCNY on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
