ENDWELL, NY – Going into the fourth inning the Penn State Abington baseball team was primed to upset no. 8 SUNY Cortland, but the Nittany Lions couldn't hold on in a 14-5 loss on Sunday afternoon. After the loss the Nittany Lions fall to 1-3 for the season.
Freshman
Zach Morales (Barrington, NJ), and sophomore
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) led the way for the Nittany Lions going 2-of-4 at the plate.
With bases loaded in the first inning, Rizzo stepped up to the plate and knocked in the first run of the game, and later
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) added another run after his sac fly to center field. The Red Dragons answered in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of multiple fielding errors to tie the game 2-2 after the first inning.
In the second inning with bases loaded and two outs Morales earned an RBI single to give the Nittany Lions the 3-2 lead. Abington kept momentum going into the third inning with an RBI from
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) and a sac bunt that scored a runner from Jaden
Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) which gave the Nittany Lions the 5-2 lead.
Unfortunately the Nittany Lions went cold after the third inning allowing 12 unanswered runs from the Red Dragons.Â
Abington will travel to the RussMatt Baseball invitational in Orlando Florida for spring break and face off against Rose-Hulman on Friday March 1
