Baseball Sweeps Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, PA. – The Penn State Abington baseball team traveled up to Muhlenberg College and took two from the Mules in a series sweep on Sunday afternoon. Abington rallied to an 8-6 win in game one, and took game two 8-5 to improve to 7-8 for the season.

Sophomore Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) got back on track for the Nittany Lions going 5-of-7 at the plate with two RBIs and two doubles between both games. On the mound McCarty also picked up his first win of the season pitching five innings with three strikeouts.

In the first game the Nittany Lions were down early after the Mules got on the board with three runs in the first inning. In the second Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) knocked in a run on his fielder's choice to get Abington a run. In the bottom half of the second the Mules added to their total leading the Nittany Lions 4-1. Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) chipped away at the lead with his sharp single to the shortstop to add a run. In the fourth Brett Guaglionona's (Abington, Pa.) sacrifice fly brought the Nittany Lions within striking distance down 4-3. A big sixth inning for the Nittany Lions pushed them into the lead with five runs highlighted by McCarty's RBI double to deep left field.  After the top half of the inning the Nittany Lions held an 8-4 lead. A solo shot in to bottom half of the frame helped the Mules cut the lead, and another run in the seventh made it 8-6.  The Nittany Lions got out of the eighth inning with three up and three down. With two runners on in the ninth inning the Nittany Lions earned two outs to hold on to the win.

A two run home run for the Mules put them on the board in game two.  Guaglionona drove in a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit.  The Mules added another two runs in the bottom half to push their lead to 4-1 after five. Another big sixth inning helped the Nittany Lions back into the lead with six runs. Freshman Louis Rossner (Delran, NJ) drove in two runs in the inning to help the Nittany Lions take a 7-4 lead. Abington added another run off a sacrifice fly from Zach Morales (Barrington, NJ). Muhlenberg answered in the bottom of the seventh with another solo shot, but couldn't overcome the Nittany Lions.
