JENKINTOWN, PA. – On their senior day seniors
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) and
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) played a key role for the Nittany Lions in the series split with Lancaster Bible on Saturday afternoon. In game one the Nittany Lions fell to the Chargers 5-3, but in game two the bats woke up in a big 13-6 win to improve to 21-15 overall and 14-3 in the conference.
In his final home game of the season Guaglionona set a single season record for walks with 32, breaking the previous record set by DiPatri last season. DiPatri led the Nittany Lions at the plate with an outstanding day, going 5-of-6 with three runs and three RBIs.
In game one neither team could get onto the board until the third inning when the Chargers took advantage of a balk to score the game's first run.  In the next inning with bases loaded, the Chargers pulled an RBI walk to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, a single for the Chargers put two more runs across the plate to take a 4-0 lead. Abington broke their silence in the bottom half of the inning when
Bill Trimble (Yardley, PA) earned a sacrifice fly to pull back a run. A sharp ball from
Darren Aupperle (Barrington, NJ) in the sixth inning chipped away at the lead for an RBI single. Guaglionona added to the lead with an RBI single of his own to cut the lead to 4-3. The Chargers tacked on to their lead in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Again the Chargers took an early lead but Abington responded when DiPatri sliced a single for his first RBI of the day. The Nittany Lions would go on to take the lead after a pair of RBI singles from
Louis Rossner (Delran, NJ) and
Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA). DiPatri was active again in the third inning with a huge RBI double to center field coming just shy of the wall. Abington took advantage of an error to push their lead to 6-3. Abington kept adding runs off of errors, but DiPatri put the game out of reach for the Chargers after he rocked his pitch to center field for his fourth home run of the season.
Abington will learn their fate tomorrow after the conference concludes the rest of the schedule.
