ABINGTON, PA. – A monster day from senior
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) led the Penn State Abington baseball team to a 20-4 win over Penn State Berks on Thursday afternoon. The Nittany Lions set a new benchmark with the largest margin of victory in a NEAC Tournament game in program history and improved to 22-15 for the season.
After a fantastic series against Lancaster Bible DiPatri picked up where he left off with a grand slam in the first inning, and another two run bomb in the fifth inning. On the mound
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) showed why he was the NEAC Pitcher of the Year earning his eighth win of the season.
In the first inning Berks took advantage of a pair of errors by Abington and scored three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. The visitors lead disappeared quickly. With bases loaded, DiPatri stepped up to the plate and smashed his first grand slam of the season over the center field wall. Next inning
Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) added to the lead with a sharp single through the left side to give Abington the 6-3 lead.
Berk's final run came in the third inning off a fielder's choice. RBI doubles from
Zach Morales (Barrington, NJ), McCarty,
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) and
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) extended the lead and DiPatri capped off the scoring frenzy with another towering homer over the right field wall.
Abington will move into the winner's bracket and face off against Wells College, who defeated Keuka College 5-0 earlier in the day. First pitch for Abington and Wells is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
