Yanss, Scotese Earn NFCA All-Region Honors

Abington, Pa. – Penn State Abington senior Gretchen Yanss and sophomore Lainey Scotese were both named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region IV teams as announced by the organization.  Yanss and Scotese were both selected to the All-Region IV second team and are the first two student-athletes in program history to earn all-region accolades.

"I am super proud of Gretchen and Lainey, for earning second team all-region," said head coach Caytlin Lihotz. "They both worked extremely hard all season long, and through their hard work were able to lead not only our team but the entire United East Conference in statistical categories all season. Gretchen ended her career on a high note, while Lainey has started her career with a bang. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Penn State Abington Softball. The future is bright!"

Yanss, a three-time All-United East selection, had a career season at the plate as she batted over .400 posting a batting average of .413 which ranks ninth best in program history in a single season.  Yanss also totaled career-highs in hits (50), doubles (10), home runs (3), runs (24), walks (8) and on-base percentage (.440).  She connected on her first career home run in a pinch-hitting situation in the team's 9-7 victory at Immaculata University back in March.  Yanss tied her career-high with a five RBI performance in a game two victory against the University of Valley Forge.  She finished the game 2-for-4 to go along with her second home run of the season.

For her career, Yanss recorded a .356 batting average to go along with 138 hits, 27 doubles, 72 runs and 85 RBI.  She recorded her 100th career hit in the home opener against Marymount University becoming the seventh player in program history to reach the milestone.  Yanss is ranked fifth all-time in career hits and is fourth all-time in RBI. She's also fifth in doubles and ninth in batting average.

In the pitching circle, Yanss totaled eight victories and struck out 101 batters for her third straight 100-plus strikeout season.  She became the first player in program history to join the 400-strikeout club after fanning five batters in game one against Keystone College.  Yanss, the program's all-time leader in K's, finished her career with 438 strikeouts.  She also finished her career with a 3.09 earned run average, the lowest in the program's record book.

Fresh off earning All-United East third team honors, Scotese can now add All-Region accolades to her rookie season.  Scotese batted .391 while collecting 43 hits, including seven doubles, three triples and one home run in her first year of collegiate action.  She also drove in 29 runs and scored 22.  Scotese recorded a season-high three hits four times during the course of the season highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance in game one of a doubleheader versus Neumann University in which two of her three hits were doubles.  She drove in a season-high four runs in the opener versus Gwynedd Mercy with her first career triple.

Abington (15-24, 9-7 UEC) finished conference play 9-7 and as a result qualified for the postseason for the 12th time advancing to the United East Second Round.
