Softball Honored for Academic Success

Abington, Pa. – Five members of the Penn State Abington softball team were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, including seniors Hailey Gamble and Gretchen Yanss and sophomores Rylee Albany, Isabella Antosiewicz and Paula Casale. In addition, Yanss was selected to the Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area team.
 
Gamble is earning CSC Academic All-District honors for the second time in her career.  She graduated with a degree in Psychological & Social Sciences in May and held a 3.78 cumulative grade point average. Gamble capped her playing career with All-United East first team honors after batting a career-high .386 to go along with career numbers in hits (49), doubles (9), walks (12), on-base percentage (.443) and stolen bases (7).  She registered at least one hit in 31-of-38 games played in, including a stretch of 17 straight games with a hit.
 
Yanss is a first-time recipient of both CSC All-District and Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area honors. She graduated with a degree in Psychology with a cumulative GPA of 3.55.  Yanss capped her career earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region accolades.  She became one of the first two players in program history to earn All-Region honors with her second team selection.
 
Yanss, a three-time All-United East selection, had a career season at the plate as she batted over .400 posting a batting average of .413 which ranks ninth best in program history in a single season.  Yanss also totaled career-highs in hits (50), doubles (10), home runs (3), runs (24), walks (8) and on-base percentage (.440).  She connected on her first career home run in a pinch-hitting situation in the team's 9-7 victory at Immaculata University back in March.  Yanss tied her career-high with a five RBI performance in a game two victory against the University of Valley Forge.  She finished the game 2-for-4 to go along with her second home run of the season.
 
Albany, a Rehabilitation & Human Services major, holds a cumulative GPA of 3.57.  She appeared in 33 games in her second year with the team, including 28 starts.  She finished the season with 17 hits, 14 runs, 11 RBI and 11 walks.  Albany registered a career-high three hits after going 3-for-4 at the plate in game two of a doubleheader at Delaware Valley University. 
 
Antosiewicz boasts a 3.70 cumulative GPA as a Business Management & Marketing major.  She started 38 games and collected 29 hits, tying her career-high.  She also scored 17 runs and drove in a career-high 21 runners.  In game two of a doubleheader at Keystone College, Antosiewicz went 3-for-4 at the plate finishing with a season-high three hits; one shy of her career-high.
 
Casale, an Accounting major, owns an impressive 3.80 cumulative grade point average. This past season she made 18 appearances in the pitching circle, including five starts.  She logged 70.1 innings and picked up four wins. Casale also struck out 28 batter, including a season-high five in her first start of the season against Mississippi University for Women.
 
Abington (15-24, 9-7 UEC) finished conference play 9-7 and as a result qualified for the postseason for the 12th time advancing to the United East Second Round.

ABOUT PHILLY-SIDA: In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, a student-athlete must be in his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.  The team is then voted on by the athletic communications offices at 30 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
