Volleyball Falls in Five Set Heartbreaker on Senior Night

Box Score
ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington volleyball team (14-8, 4-4 NEAC) came out of the gate swinging but ran out of steam in a five set marathon against Bryn Athyn (9-18), falling 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, and 14-16.

Tuesday night marked the final regular season match at home for Abington's two seniors – Krysten Boyd and Maria Narodetsky – as each were honored before the match.

In one of the closest sets in recent memory, the Lady Lions put up big numbers across the board, especially on the defensive end, to give their opponents all they could handle on the night. Four Abington players posted double-digit digs – Abby Millan and Johnangelie Thomas with finished with 17, while Leah Brown posted 19 and Krysten Body ended the night with 27.

Brown picked up her 13th double-doubles of the season with 42 assists and 19 digs, while Thomas and Millan posted a combine effort of 32 kills to pace the Abington offense. Kate Schalck added eight kills on the night.

Abington began the match lighting up the court with a .250 in the first set compared to Bryn Athyn's .091 on the way to the first win of the night.

The Lady Lions pushed to their advantage throughout the second set, even cutting the deficit to two at 21-23 to lock up the set with two unforced errors by Bryn Athyn.

Under the serve of Cree Gurney, Bryn Athyn sprinted out to even up the score at five apiece and after seven lead changes midway through the period, the Lions shook up the Lady Lions by nailing the final kill for the 25-23 win to take the third set.

Abington found itself in a five-point hole in the fourth set at 15-20 when it exploded for six unanswered points to take the 21-20 lead. Rachel Scornaienchi and Kate Schlack combined for a huge block-assist to deny the Lions' first set point, but an series of unforced error and three consecutive Bryn Athyn kills would be enough to extend the match to a fifth and final set.

Once again, the Lady Lions hope to build momentum early, but a series of errors from both sides of the net put the score tied at nine and then again at 12 before Bryn Athyn pulled away with the set and the match on three Abington hiccups and a final kill.

Abington will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts the NEAC Conference crossover tournament. The first match is slated for 3 p.m.
