WASHINGTON, D.C. – The women's volleyball team closed yesterday with a win and was hoping to roll that success over into the beginning of today's play at the NEAC Crossover at Gallaudet University this weekend. The Lady Lions, however, got off to a rough start, dropping a pair of matches Saturday to Lancaster Bible (3-0) and Penn State Berks (3-0) respectively.
The losses drop the team to 12-7 on the season and 4-4 in NEAC play. The Lady Lions ran into trouble in their first match, squaring off with a tough Chargers team. Lancaster Bible handed Abington its sixth loss of the season by set scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-22.
In the opener,
Johangelie Thomas paced the offense with nine kills, while
Kate Schalck chipped in five and
Abby Millan tallied four. Abington, however, was only able to hit .090 as a team. Another key player for the Lady Lions was
Leah Brown, whorecorded a double double of 15 assists and digs respectively. Millan and
Krysten Boyd contributed with 11 digs each.
On the back end of the day's matches, conference foe Penn State Berks gave Abington its third loss of the weekend with a 3-0 win. After Berks got out to a 1-0 lead with a first-set win of 25-22, Abington rallied back into contention during the second set, but fell short by a 25-20 score. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, Berks took over from there, winning the final set by a score of 25-11.
Despite the loss, Millan, Thomas, and Schalck was a force at the net for the Lady Lions, totaling 21 kills on 85 swings, good for a .456 hitting percentage combined. Boyd, once again, played a key role on defense as she came up with 15 digs. Brown recorded her third consecutive double-double on the weekend and her 11
th of the season, recording 17 assists and 15 kills in the loss.
The Lady Lions will rest momentarily and will return to action next weekend at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13
th against host Gwynedd-Mercy College in their first match of two in the tri-match invite.
