Mustangs Stop Nittany Lions Win Streak at 8

Box Score Morrisville, N.Y. - All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, this even includes 8-game winning streaks. Penn State Abington (8-1, 6-1 NEAC) dropped a tough 3-0 match to the Mustangs of Morrisville State (9-3-1, 4-1-1 NEAC) earlier this afternoon, their first loss since the 2011 season.

After holding on for a 3-2 victory yesterday at Cazenovia, the Nittany Lions were looking to extend their record setting start to an incredible 9-0. However, the combination of several potent Mustang attacks and a strong defensive showing kept Penn State Abington off the board and out of the win column for the first time in 2012.

The Mustangs sent a shock to the Nittany Lions' system right off the bat, getting on the scoreboard just 6:21 into the game. Junior forward Tom Huber managed to slip through the defense and force the ball into the back of the net, putting the Mustangs up 1-0.

Penn State Abington would make an effort to fight back in the half, lighting off 7 shots and forcing freshman goalkeeper Rob Larkin into making four saves. The Nittany Lions even earned all four of the corner kicks in the first half. It simply wasn't to be however, as it was actually the Mustangs who got another goal in the first half. This time, senior Sanley Pierre-Louis was led in on goal off an excellent pass from Gilroy Alvarez. Pierre-Louis went in alone on Nittany Lions goalkeeper James Carlin and managed to slide a shot past the freshman keeper, giving Morrisville State a 2-0 first half lead.

As the second half began, it was evident that the Nittany Lions still had plenty of fight left in them. Penn State Abington created plenty of chances, registering another nine shots and forcing four more saves. It simply wasn't to be for the boys in blue. In the end, Morrisville got one more insurance goal, as Pierre-Louis tallied an unassisted goal, and the Mustangs came away with the 3-0 victory.

Even with the loss, Penn State Abington still holds on to the first place position in the NEAC standings, a half-game ahead of Penn State Harrisburg. The Nittany Lions get their first crack at starting a brand new winning streak comes on the road next Saturday at Penn State Berks in the first of three games back-to-back-to-back.
