Baseball Opens Season With Sweep of Centenary

The Penn State Abington baseball team swept Centenary College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Flemington, N.J.

Game One – Abington 4, Centenary College 2:

Abington posted a run in the first inning as Jesse Goldstein scored off of Bill Parave's sacrificed fly but Centenary bounced right back with two runs of its own in the next two innings to make it 2-1. After Lawson was hit by the pitch and later advanced to third in the top third, he then scored the tying run for Abington off of Pat Moran's grounder.

Two innings later, Lawson stole the bases twice and later scored his second run of the game off of Moran's grounder, giving Abington the 3-2 lead. Lawson added an insurance run in the seventh for the Nittany Lions as he singled up the middle of the field, allowing Chris Hunter to score from third to seal the game 4-2.

Pitcher Robert Morak picked up his first win of the season as Kevin Faber earned the save, striking out one batter. At the plate, Dustin Kology went 2-for-4 while AJ Vagliani, Mike Kerns each finished with a hit.

Game Two
– Abington 14, Centenary 5:

Tom Ditro had a 2-for-3 performance and drove in three runs in the win. Goldstein also came up with three RBIs while Lawson, Alex Torres each scored two while Michael Corrigan, Moran, each hit in a run.

On the mound, Brian Camp got the start and went four solid innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. With the game tied at three apiece after the fourth, Centenary found life and retook the lead, scoring two runs to make it a 5-2 ballgame. In the top of sixth, Goldstein doubled to center field allowing Vagliani and Moran scored to tie the game up at five runs apiece. Despite walking two of Centenary batters, Morak, who earned his second win of the day, managed to hold off the runners in the bottom of sixth to keep the game alive for the Nittany Lions.

Abington's bat came to life during the seventh as Bill Parave led the hitting parade with a ground-rule double and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Centenary pitcher Danny Derner could not find the groove and walked the next two Abington batters with the bases now loaded and no outs.

On the next batter, Torres singled through the right side to bring two runners safely home to push the lead to 7-5. The bombing didn't stop there as both Moran and Corrigan singled out to left field for an RBI, later followed by Goldstein singling up the middle, his third hit of the day, to drive in another run, making it 10-5. Abington scored four additional runs before closing the game for their second win on the season.

The Nittany Lions are off until they open their spring trip against Johnson and Wales in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Friday, March 2nd.
