The Penn State Abington softball team won a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning in game one and overwhelmed Rosemont College, 14-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One – Abington 2, Rosemont 1:
Tiffany Sipler struck out six batters as
Mariellen Medernach scored the winning run off after going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Melissa Kulp and
Brittany Smedley were 1-for-4 as
Sam Kidd went 1-for-3.
Rosemont got on board in the 1
st off a right field hit. Three innings later, Kidd posted a sac fly to drive Medernach, who tripled to center field at the plate, to tie up the game.
After four innings, Abington finally broke the tie in the 9
th during the extra-inning play as Medernach stole third before scoring home off of
Trish Watson's sacrifice fly for the first win of the season.
Game Two – Abington 14, Rosemont 2 (5 inn):
The Lady Lions scored five runs to open the second game as Kidd started the accumulation of runs with a double out to left field, plating two runs. Watson then tripled out to right field to round the runner at third home, later to score the fourth run herself off of Smeldey's single. The fifth run was later added as
Rebecca Patenaude ground out, bringing Smedley home from third.
Abington's bats stayed alive and accumulated nine runs in the next four innings to jump ahead 14-2 before the game was called.
Eight players posted a hit and collected at least an RBI in the game. Kidd went 2-for-3, posting four RBIs and a run. Teammates
Krysten Boyd and Watson both went 2-for-3 and posted two RBIs with Watson plating two runs.
The Lady Lions will return to action at 3 p.m on Saturday as they host Wesley College in a double-header in the home opener at Hutingdon Field.
