Baseball falls to Gwyedd-Mercy, 9-5

Box Score The Penn State Abington baseball team (4-8) fell to Gwynedd-Mercy College (8-3) with the 9-5 decision Friday evening.

Abington started the game with a two run lead off of Tom Ditro's (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan)single that plated the two runs.

However, Gwynedd-Mercy answered back by scoring six runs in the first two innings to take the 6-2 lead.

The Nittany Lions struggled to retake the lead, despite scoring three additional runs, only to be matched by the Griffins keeping the margin to four throughout the game.

Junior Mike Kerns (Warminister, Pa./Archbishop Wood) went 2-for-5 at the plate, posting two runs and two RBIs with nine. Teammates Jesse Goldstein (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) and Pat Moran (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) each singled a hit and run.

On the mound, Bill Parave (Merchantville, N.J./Camden CC) threw 5.2 innings in the start and allowed eight runs. Sophomore Chris Marone (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) pitched three innings in relief and allowed three earned runs.

Abington will continue the three-game weekend with the second stanza at Ursinus College tomorrow for the 12 p.m. doubleheader. The Nittany Lions will close out the weekend, hosting the double header against SUNY Canton on Sunday for the home opener at 12 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
