The Penn State Abington baseball team split a doubleheader against Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, Abington scored six runs in the first inning to pace them to a 8-4 victory. Ursinus posted nine runs in the fourth inning of game two, eventually leading 11-1 before Abington used a late rally in the sixth and seventh innings, coming up short at 16-5. With the split Abington is now 5-8 on the season.
Game One – Abington 8, Ursinus 4
Mike Kerns started the scoring for Abington to open the score while
Tom Ditro followed suit and later scored off a wild pitch.
Bill Parave knocked the ball out of the park to push the lead 4-0.
Michael Corrigan then wrapped up the inning with a base hit to round Hill safely home.
Abington later added two additional runs in the sixth inning as Corrigan set up the scoring run with a double.
Jesse Goldstein then singled, leading to Corrigan swiping home.
Matt Lawson later posted the base hit to bring
Dustin Kology home safe from third to wrap up the inning as Abington held on for the 8-4 victory.
Anthony DiVincenzo pitched all seven innings for the Nittany Lions, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out a batter.
Game Two – Ursinus 16, Abington 5
Trailing 11-1 in the fourth, Abington went to work, scoring two runs on two hits in the sixth. It started with an error by Ursinus's shortstop, allowing Parave to be safe at first, giving both Ditro and Lawson the opportunity to score the runs at home unearned.
Pat Moran led off the top of the seventh with a single to center field followed by Lawson notching a triple for the RBI. Kerns then used his power to fly out to right field for the sac to bring Lawson home for the second and the last run of the inning as Abington could not muster the rally as Ursinus held on for the 16-5 win.
Pat Trymbiski started for the Nittany Lions but never got comfortable, lasting just three innings, giving up five runs, all earned.
Chris Marone and Dan Hill filled in relief, both getting an inning of work.
Anthony DeAngelis managed the sixth, giving up only a hit.
Abington will finish the up the weekend, hosting the season home opener tomorrow at 12 p.m for the doubleheader against SUNY Canton at
Alverthorpe Park.
