The Penn State Abington softball team dropped both games against Wesley College on Saturday evening. In the first game, Wesley scored eight runs in the fifth inning to pace them to a 14-1 victory. The heat continued into the second game as Wesley posted six runs in the first inning and eight more in the second to put the game out of reach.
With the losses, Abington is now .500 (2-2) on the season.
Game One – Wesley 14, Abington 1
Wesley College jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings before
Mariellen Medernach posted the lone run of the game for Abington off of junior
Trish Watson's sacrificed fly. Wesley later tallied eight additional runs in the fifth to end the game.
Tiffany Sipler started on the mound for Abington but could not get comfortable throughout the game, giving up 15 hits and 14 runs, but did strikeout four Wesley batters.
Game Two – Wesley 16, Abington 4
Wesley flustered the pitching crew of Abington after opening the second game with six runs, one off a three run home run. Two innings later, seven batters scored a run with one knocking the ball out of the park for a two run home run for the 15-0 lead.
Abington finally found a rhythm during the fourth inning as
Sam Kidd lead off the batting order with a single out to left field. Watson then doubled out to right field before being plating home off of Brittany Smedly's base hit to post two runs on the board for the Lady Lions.
Two additional runs were added to the board as both
Rebecca Patenaude and
Melanie Brown each notched the RBI but it wasn't enough for the Lady Lions as Wesley handed them their second loss of the season.
Melissa Kulp started on the mound for the Lady Lions but struggled to fine her groove as she gave up 13 runs in 12 hits. Sipler filled in relief but could not quiet down the hitters, giving up three runs in five hits.
Abington will take tomorrow off and then return to action on Monday, hosting Arcadia University at Huntingdon Field for the 3 p.m. game.
