Parave Flirts With No-Hitter in Two-Hit Shutout at Rutgers-Camden

Box Score
Junior righty Bill Parave (Merchantville, NJ/Camden CC) hurled no-hit ball into the eighth inning, scored the first run of the game and drove home three with a ninth-inning double to lead the Penn State Abington baseball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 4-0, in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon.

Parave (1-2) finished with a two-hit shutout, while belting two doubles in four trips to the plate for the Nittany Lions, who evened their record at 9-9. Penn State-Abington has won four straight games. Rutgers-Camden fell to 6-7 with its second straight loss.

BOX SCORE - Abington 4, Rutgers-Camden 0

Parave had to be sharp as he was locked in a pitchers' duel with Raptor sophomore Tommy Potts (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown). Potts, who entered the game with a deceptive 1-1 record despite a stellar 1.08 ERA, matched Parave with shutout innings until the fifth, when the Nittany Lions' pitcher/designated hitter ripped a leadoff double down the left field line. He advanced on a ground out and scored on another ground out to second by freshman second baseman Michael Corrigan (Warminster, PA/William Tennant).

After helping himself to the lead, Parave made sure he protected it. He fired no-hit ball until junior catcher Shaune Collins (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) led off the bottom of the eighth inning and grounded a single up the middle, just under the dive of shortstop Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan). After the Raptors had a pinch-runner thrown out at second on an attempted steal, senior rightfielder Tristan Keyser (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) collected Rutgers-Camden's only other hit of the day – a two-out single to right field.

Parave finished with five walks and three strikeouts. Two of those walks came in the ninth inning before he nailed down the shutout.

Penn State Abington tacked on its final three runs in the top of the ninth after a single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. Parave stepped to the plate and roped a bases-clearing double to left field, giving himself plenty of insurance runs.

Potts (1-2) finished with a four-hitter over 8-2/3 innings before sophomore Paul Walters (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) retired the final batter in the ninth inning on a strikeout. Potts walked three and struck out seven.

Parave, with his 2-for-4 day, one run and three RBIs, was the only multiple-hit player in the game.

Penn State Abington will look to make it five straight as it entertains Valley Forge Christian College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday.
