The Penn State Abington softball team swept the College of Saint Elizabeth this afternoon in a NEAC Conference opener for both teams.
Abington (6-6, 2-0 NEAC) won the opener, 9-2 in dramatic fashion before needing an extra inning in game two to win 8-7 with a walk off run.
Game 1: Abington 9, College of St. Elizabeth 2
Junior
Trish Watson went 2-for-3 at the plate, posting a three-run home run in the sixth, collecting a combine total four RBIs.
Abington jumped out to a four run lead after three innings. The Lady Eagles managed to post just two runs in three hits before
Sam Kidd drove in two runs in the fourth to extend the lead 6-2 for Abington.
Freshman pitcher
Tiffany Sipler started on the mound for the Lady Lions, limiting St. Elizabeth to two runs in just three hits, while striking out four batters for the win.
Game 2: Abington 8, College of St. Elizabeth 7 (8 innings)
The Lady Lions rallied back from a five run deficit to edge St. Elizabeth in the eighth inning for the second win of the series.
St. Elizabeth scored the first run of the game before posting four additional runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Lady Lions answered back with four runs of their own. Freshman
Melissa Kulp started the scoring opportunities as she drove in a run before scoring from third to make it 5-1. Kulp and
Melanie Brown both scored at home off a wild pitch to cut the deficit to two. Watson wrapped up the inning by driving in a run off a hit out to left field to make it 5-4.
The Lady Eagles added an insurance run in the third, only to be outwitted during the fourth as Watson knocked the ball out of the park for a three-run home run to give Abington the 7-6 lead.
However, the lead didn't last long as St. Elizabeth managed to tie the game in the fifth inning. Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities but could not find home as the game was forced into extra innings.
Senior
Mariellen Medernach, who was called up to fill in for relief on the mound in the fifth, held St. Elizabeth to just one hit in the eighth inning.
After sophomore
Christina Rodriguez walked at the top of the batting order, catcher
Brittany Smedley took the opportunity and perfected the sacrificed bunt, allowing Rodriguez to advance safely at second.
Jalisa Clarke then, singled through center field to put the runners on the corners, before stealing second to add more pressure. After facing a two balls and one strike count, Brown found the gap between first and second, driving the Rodriguez safely home for the walk off run.
Abington is back in action on March 31st as it continues the North Eastern Athletic Conference play at Gallaudet University for the 1 p.m. doubleheader.
