Softball Splits Conference Play Against Gallaudet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Junior Trish Watson's two-run home run helped Penn State Abington's softball team to earn a split in its North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon with the Lady Lions taking the opener 8-5, while the Bison took the nightcap in five innings 11-3.

Game 1 – Abington 8, Gallaudet 5

Freshman Melissa Kulp scored the first run of the game off a wild pitch to give Abington the 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gallaudet later posted two runs in the second to retake the lead.

Abington broke through in the third inning, scoring four runs in just two hits, with two runs off four Bison errors.

Watson then found the sweet spot in the fourth inning as she connected the ball for a two-run home run, which puts her on a four-game home run streak, to extend the lead, 7-2 for Abington.

Gallaudet answered back with two runs of its own in the fifth before Abington managed to plate a run of its own in the sixth to hold on for the 8-5 win.

Christina Rodriguez went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI single and a run while first baseman Sam Kidd went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a run as well.

Game 2 – Gallaudet 11, Abington 3

Gallaudet came out with more aggressiveness in the second game, scoring 11 runs in just eight hits in the first three innings.

Abington could only muster three runs, all in the third inning as Kulp placed the ball out into right field for a 2 RBI triple. Kulp later reached home safely on the next batter, for the third and final run of the game for the Lady Lions.

Senior Mariellen Medernach started on the mound for the Lady Lions but could not get comfortable after one inning, giving up seven runs in seven hits and walked three Bison batters. Kulp filled in releief for the remainder of the game and couldn't contain the Lady Bisons, giving up four runs in two hits and walked two.

Watson went 0-for-2 at the plate, therefore ending her four-game home run streak.

The split puts Abington at 7-7 overall and 3-1 in NEAC action. The Lady Lions continues NEAC play tomorrow in a doubleheader against its conference rival, Penn State Harrisburg.
