Baseball Defeats John Jay in a 9 Inning Thriller

Box Score Penn State Abington (17-4) defeated John Jay College (7-23)  13-12 in a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon.

Abington used an eleven-run first inning to explode out to a 11-1 lead. Dustin Kology led the batting order with a base hit before stealing second. Pat Moran then posted an RBI single, plating Kology home from second for the first run of the game. Mike Kerns kept the hitting streak alive on a 2 RBI double for the 3-1 lead.

With the bases loaded, AJ Vagliani and Will Erskine notched an RBI as both batters were hit by the pitch to rotate the runners on bases, plating two additional runs for the 5-1 streak.

Returning to the top of the batting order, Moran collected two more RBIs as he singled out to the right side of center field before Matt Lawson posted an RBI single. Daniel Hill collected the last two RBIs on a base hit before Jay John managed to close out the first inning

The Bloodhounds cut the fireworks short, responding back with an eight-run third inning, using just four hits to trail 12-8. John Jay then added two additional runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to just two runs.

After a pitching change on both sides, the runs began to dwindle as both teams turned up the heat on the mound and tighten its defensive play . Neither teams were able to score in the next two innings, keeping the score close 12-10, Abington.

Finally in the seventh, Abington broke through the gap as Kology singled and later stole second before scoring at home on a Kerns base double to extend the lead, 13-10.

The Bloodhounds used their scoring opportunity in the eighth, plating a run before notching a second run on a scarified fly to trail 13-12. However, it wasn't enough to tie up the game as Abington called upon its closer, Robert Morak to shut down the game for the Nittany Lions' victory.

Lawson went 4-for-5 at the plate, posting two runs and an RBI. Moran and Kerns went 3-for-5 and 3-for-4 respectively and posted three RBIs apiece.

Pat Trymbiski started on the mound for the Nittany Lions and pitched three full innings, allowing 10 runs in six hits, striking out three Bloodhound batters. Kevin Faber filled in for relief and struck out two batters while closer, Morak also struck out two batters and was credited with the save.

The Nittany Lions move back into NEAC Conference play on Saturday when they host SUNY IT for an afternoon twinbill. The action begins at 12 p.m.
