Penn State Abington baseball captured two wins in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match up against first place SUNY IT. With the wins, Penn State Abington is now tied for second place in the NEAC.
Game 1: Abington 4, SUNY IT, 2
Both pitchers from Abington and SUNY IT commanded the mound for the first two innings, as neither pitcher allowed a run. Abington got on the board first when sophomore catcher
A.J. Vagliani drilled a ball deep to center field for a solo home run in the bottom of the 3
rd.
The fourth inning remained scoreless for both teams before Abington scored two runs in the bottom of the 5
th inning. Junior
Michael Corrigan recorded an RBI single, scoring
Tom Ditro from second base. Corrigan later crossed the plate thanks to an error by the Wildcats' shortstop.
SUNY IT managed to score two runs in the top of the 6
th; this would be their only runs of the game. Abington scored their final run of the first game in the bottom of the 6
th as Dan Hill doubled to center field, bringing
Jesse Goldstein home, who was in to pinch run for
Bill Parave.
All three batters that SUNY IT brought to the plate in the top of the 7
th were retired in order, allowing Abington to slide by with the 4-2 victory.
Game 2: Abington 14, SUNY IT, 7
Late inning heroics proved to be the key, as Penn State Abington cruised to a 14-7 victory in the second game.
SUNY IT was the first to draw blood in nightcap of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Abington answered back quickly with two runs of its own.
Dustin Kology reached base with a triple to right field. Kology would later score off of a
Matt Lawson sacrifice fly.
Mike Kerns scored the second run as Dan Hill recorded his 100
th career hit, allowing Kerns to cross the plate.
SUNY IT tacked on three more runs in second inning bringing the score to 5-2.
In the third, SUNY IT posted an additional run while Abington scored twice, making it a 6-4 ballgame. Both Hill and Vagliani recorded RBI's in the third.
Lawson and Parave both collected and RBI single in the bottom of the forth for Abington to trail 7-6. However, neither team could manage to score in the 5
th inning.
Abington blew the game wide open with an eight run, two out rally in the 6
th inning. The Nittany Lions racked up, six walks, two singles, two doubles, and one hit-by- a-pitch to bring the score to 14-7; the rest was history.
Penn State will be back in action Monday, April 16
th as they take on 7
th place, Lancaster Bible College at home.
