Abington Softball Snaps 11-Game Skid by Routing Berks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Penn State Abington softball team's offense came alive in a big way in Reading, Pa. with a 4-1 victory over Penn State Berks in game one on Sunday afternoon.  Abington added its second consecutive win with a 12-10 win in the nightcap.

As a result, The Lady Lions snapped a 11-game losing streak and completed the season with the series tied against Berks.
With the wins, the Lady Lions improve to 5-9 in the NEAC Conference and 9-17 on the season, while Berks fall to 9-5 in the conference and 9-22 on the season.

Game 1 – Abington 4, Berks 1

Tiffany Sipler came up big for Abington as she pitched all seven innings and struck out six batters, allowing just one run in four hits and two walks.

Abington managed to score two runs to take the lead of the game in the third inning as Melissa Kulp posted an RBI single, plating Rebecca Patenaude at home from third. Three batters later, Mariellen Medernach scored the second run of the game on a passed ball.

Berks responded back in the bottom of the third with a run scored off a sacrifice fly, before Abington managed to plate two additional runs in the fourth inning. Melissa Kulp used the same tactics with a sacrifice fly, allowing Krysten Boyd to tag up at third and advance safely at home for Abington's third run. Patenaude then scored the fourth and final run of the game for Abington off a Trish Waston's RBI single.

Kulp went 2-for-3 at the plate, collecting two RBIs.

Game 2 – Abington 12, Berks 10

Abington kept the momentum on their side, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first before Berks responded with two runs of its own in the first inning, before taking the lead with three additional runs in the next two innings.

Abington then used a seven-run fifth inning to bust the game wide open with a 10-5 lead. Brittay Smedley started the rally with an RBI single. An error by Berks' centerfielder allowed Smedley and Rodriguez to score unearned, giving Abington the 6-5 lead. Boyd and Kulp each posted an RBI single, adding four insurance runs for Abington.

However, Berks would not give up easily as it scored two runs in the fourth before contributing a lone run in the fifth to trail 10-8. Abington needed space and did so during the seventh inning as Paternaude scored off an error by Berks' shortstop. Sam Kidd then used an RBI single to round Kulp at home from second base.

Berks attempted its final rally in the seventh but could only muster two runs in two hits for its second loss of the day.
Sipler started on the mound again for the second game and notched her fourth win of the season. She allowed ten runs in nine hits, striking out a batter and walked nine times.

Kidd (3-for-5) led the hit parade and posted two RBIs, while teammate Kulp (2-for-3) also notched two RBIs, contributing three runs in the victory.
 
The Lady Lions will travel to Morristown, N.J. to take on the College of St. Elizabeth on Tuesday, April 17th. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
