Softball Split Doubleheader With St. Elizabeth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Penn State Abington softball team split its doubleheader match-up with the College of Saint Elizabeth 12-2, 9-7 Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Lions improved to 10-18 overall and 6-11 in West Division of the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
The latest results put Abington in fourth place, four games behind third place, Penn State Berks, who also split its doubleheader.

Game 1 – Abington 12, St. Elizabeth 2

The Nittany Lions got on board tallying five runs and three hits in the first inning. Melissa Kulp posted the first run for Abington after stealing home on a passed ball. Sam Kidd connected on a RBI single, bringing Mariellen Medernach at home from second base.

Brittany Smedley managed to single out to left field as Kidd scored from third before Jalisa Clarke's 2 RBI double extended the lead 5-0, before being picked off to end the inning.

St. Elizabeth took turn scoring runs, but could only muster a run before Abington struck in the second inning with two additional tallies. The Lady Lions kept the offense rolling, scoring three more in the fourth and twice more in the final inning as the game was called due to the eight run rule to give Abington the 12-2 win.

Trish Watson and Kidd each went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Christina Rodriguez finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, while Medernach scored three runs in the game.

Tiffany Sipler pitched five full innings, allowing just two runs and one hit, struck out three and walked four.
 
Game 2 – St. Elizabeth 9, Abington 7

It was now St. Elizabeth's turn to jump ahead as the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 score after three innings.
Abington finally battled back in to the game during the fourth as Melanie Brown advanced on a bases-loaded walk for the first run credit. Kulp and Watson each added an RBI single to make it a 9-4 ball game.

The Screaming Eagles remained idle after three scoreless innings as Abington tried to rally in the sixth and seventh inning but could only muster two total runs for the loss.

Kulp went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs as Watson (2-for-3) collected two RBIs. Sipler pitched all six innings and gave up nine runs and 14 hits for her eighth loss of the season.

Abington will return to action on Saturday as it hosts a doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg in a NEAC Conference match-up. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m.
