Softball Splits Doubleheader with Harrisburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Penn State Abington softball team split with Penn State Harrisburg this afternoon. Abington managed to edge Harrisburg 3-2 in the first game before dropping the 6-4 decision in the nightcap game.

With the split, Abington is now 11-19 overall record and in fourth place spot with a 7-11 mark in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Game 1 – Abington 3, Harrisburg 2

Abington took the first lead of the game in the second when Rebecca Paternaude used a sacrifice bunt to advance Brittany Smedly to second. Jalisa Clarke then singled the ball into play to round Smedly home for the first run of the game.

Harrisburg responded in the fourth, scoring a run before Christina Rodriguez tallied an RBI single to retake the 2-1 lead for Abington.

Harrisburg managed to tie the game once again, but like the storyline before, Abington broke the tie game as Watson pulls through in clutch, posting walk-off hit with an RBI single to drive Melissa Kulp safely home for Abington's 3-2 victory.

Tiffany Sipler had a strong support on defense from her teammates that limited the Harrisburg runs as she struck out one batter, allowing just two runs on seven hits.

Game 2 – Harrisburg 6, Abington 4

Harrisburg jumped out 2-0 lead after three innings before Abington rallied back in the bottom of the third as Mariellen Medernach tallied an RBI single to bring Melanie Brown safely home. Trish Watson then drove in the tying run, plating Christina Rodriguez, before being caught out after the fact on a pick off play.

Both teams traded a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth, as Harrisburg hoped to jump ahead in the lead in the fourth with two runs before being matched by Abington's two earned runs to tie the game up at four apiece.

Harrisburg broke through once again, tallying two runs in the sixth before shutting down Abington's offense for the remainder of the game as Abington had to settle for the 6-4 loss.

The Lady Lions will wrap up the NEAC Conference match-up on Tuesday, April 24th, hosting Gallaudet University. The first game is slated for 4 p.m.
