Box Score The Penn State Abington baseball team suffered a 6-5 heartbreaker to Gallaudet University this afternoon.
#3 Gallaudet rallied in the seventh inning and held on for the 6-5 victory over #2 Abington to advance to the winner consolation bracket. Abington's loss places them into the double elimination bracket against SUNY IT, who lost to Penn State Berks 9-4.
Abington got on board first in the second inning as
Mike Kerns scored the first run of the game off an
Will Erskine RBI single. However, the lead didn't hold for long as Gallaudet responded in the top of the third inning scoring three runs on three hits before adding an additional run in the fourth inning for the 4-1 lead.
The Nittany Lions rallied back from the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, as
Tom Ditro began the collection of runs on a sacrifice fly, plating Kerns from third on the tag up. AJ Vagliani singled out to the right side of the third baseline for an RBI single, rounding Corrigan and Parave safely home, to make it a tied game at four runs apiece.
Abington retook the lead in the sixth as Ditro tripled out to right center before scoring the leading run off a squeeze play by
Michael Corrigan for the 5-4 score.
Gallaudet struck back in the seventh inning as William Bissell posted a 2 RBI single, giving the Bison the 6-5 lead.
Abington could not muster the tying run in the last two innings of the game with two runners left on base.
Anthony DiVincenzo started on the mound for Abington and struck out two batters and walked twice in the seven innings pitched, allowing six runs on 10 hits with an error.
Kevin Faber filled in for relief in the last two innings, striking out a batter and allowing one hit.
Vagliani went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Kerns (3-for-4) scored two runs.
The Nittany Lions will take on SUNY IT tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the double elimination bracket at Penn State Berks.
