Baseball Splits With Gallaudet in NEAC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Penn State Abington (13-13, 2-2 NEAC) baseball split a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Gallaudet University (13-4, 2-4 NEAC) Friday afternoon, falling to the Bison 11-0 in the opener, before beating Gallaudet 12-5 in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Gallaudet 11, Abington 0

Gallaudet's pitcher Marcus Smith struck out three and held the Nittany Lions hitless until Abington's Mike Kerns finally broke the opportunity for a no-hitter in the bottom of seventh.

The Nittany Lions were frustrated throughout the game and could not find the gap in the fields to get on base. Gallaudet scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings for the 4-0 lead.

The Bison finally busted the game wide open in the final inning, scoring seven runs in seven hits for an easy 11-0 victory.

Game 2 – Abington 12, Gallaudet 5

Abington came to life during the nightcap utilizing an eight-run third inning to take the lead. Dustin Kology started the scoring spree with an RBI, double which led to Kerns posting an RBI single. Bill Parave followed suit with a RBI single of his own as Tom Ditro doubled out to right center, plating Kerns and Matt Lawson, to collect two RBIs. Daniel Hill successfully popped out to center field for a sac fly to bring Parave home for the 6-2 lead. Two more runs were scored by AJ Vagliani and Ditro as the inning winded down, giving Abington the 8-2 lead.

Pitcher, Hill brought on the heat in the six innings that he pitched, striking out eight Bison batters, giving up just five runs in five hits, and walked three.

Abington extended the lead to 12, adding four additional runs in the bottom of fifth before Gallaudet attempted a comeback, but could only muster three runs in the sixth inning as the Nittany Lions held on for the 12-5 win.

Abington will travel to New York tomorrow for a doubleheader against Keuka College with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
