Lady Lions Volleyball Drops Season Opener, 3-0

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Penn State Abington volleyball team battled Arcadia University tight the entire match, including a 25-22 third set, but dropped a 3-0 decision to the Knights in the 2012 season opener Friday night at the Koch Gymnasium.

Senior Joangelie Thomas (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) led the way with a match high seven kills while classmate Kate Schalck (Warminister, Pa.) added six. Tecolinca Alegria (Elgin, Ill.) collected 12 digs while Rachel Scornaienchi (Philadelphia, Pa) and Thomas added six digs each. Thomas and Schalck each handed out 15 assists.

Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts as Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas) and Ann Cheshinski (Langhorne, Pa.) chipped in two and one kills, respectively, while combining for 11 assists.

In set three, Abington jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Arcadia took control with tough blocking and timely kills to take 17-14 lead. The Lady Lions kept the set close and got within one, 22-21, before the Knights claimed the set, 25-22.

Abington (0-1) heads to Westminister, Maryland, this weekend for the McDaniel Green Terror Invitational. The Lady Lions take on Keystone College at 2 p.m. followed by McDaniel College at 4 p.m.
