READING, Pa. – Looking to rebound after a tough 5-4 loss to Messiah College last week, the Penn State Abington men's tennis team won its first match of the season, as the Nittany Lions swept Albright College, 9-0, on Friday afternoon. Sophomore
Anthony Hui picked up his second win of the season after defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Abington fed off a strong doubles performance during the match, taking all three pairings on the day, en route to sweeping away Albright College on a sunny day.
The Nittany Lions opened their first match of the day with the hunger for a season's first win. Senior
Jordan Domsky and
Steven Ly set the tone of the day early, clinching their first victory in first doubles. The duo took down Lui Ruicong and Walter Cain, 8-4, and more importantly led the charge in a much improved Penn State doubles attack.
Next, senior
Nigel Hopkinson and
Ross Raddi secured the doubles point with a 8-2 victory over Ian Moore and Joe Monzo in seconds doubles. Finally, senior
Matthew Wolff and sophomore Rob Raddi completed the doubles sweep with a 8-2 win on court three.
With three doubles points in hand,
Ross Raddi started singles play off on the right foot, easily dispatching of Terrance Goode in fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0. Hui followed with another quick win, defeating Thomas Werner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match. Then, Hopkinson took center stage with the chance to wrap up a victory for the Nittany Lions. The senior jumped out a 6-1 first set triumph and finally making way for the win with a 6-4 decision.
After the match had been decided, Ly and
James Howell defeated their opponents in straight sets to complete the sweep and improve to 1-1 on the season.
Abington will return to action on September 24
th as it takes on host Cabrini College for the 3:30 p.m. match.
