Box Score Penn State Abington Crushes Lions, Moves to 6-0
Bryn Athyn, Pa. - The Nittany Lions took their perfect 5-0 record just down the road to nearby Bryn Athyn College for a midweek non-conference tilt this afternoon. Penn State Abington netted three first-half goals en route to their 5-1 victory, keeping the undefeated streak intact.
It didn't take long for the Nittany Lions (6-0, 4-0 NEAC) to start the game off on the right foot. Just eight minutes into the midday affair, it was senior forward
Marco Paparo with the hot hand who got Penn State Abington on the board, with the assist from sophomore
Gustavo Alegria. The goal was Paparo's fifth in three games, and it helped move him (momentarily) into the team lead for season tallies.
Penn State Abington would get the eventual game winner 13 minutes later. Just 59 seconds after coming off the bench as a substitute, senior
Matt Howard recorded the unassisted goal that put the Nittany Lions up by a score of 2-0. The team would get its third and final goal of the half with six minutes to go, this time off the foot of senior
Alex Martins. The three goals of the period came off 16 total shots from the team, while the Nittany Lions were able to limit Bryn Athyn (3-4) to just two shots in the period.
That strong defensive/potent offensive combination continued to a certain extent into the second half, as Bryn Athyn was limited to five shots in the second frame. They only managed to get two of those on goal, but one of those did sneak past freshman goalkeeper
James Carlin. Carlin, relatively untested on the night, made two saves on the way to recording his sixth victory to open the campaign. He did have his clean sheet intact this afternoon all the way up to the 79
th minute, but that ended when junior Blake McCurdy took a pass from freshman Ik Jin Yu and slotted the ball into the net, making the score 3-1.
It would be the only blemish on an otherwise perfect afternoon for the Nittany Lions. Howard would get the away team back ahead by three with four minutes left, getting his second unassisted goal of the game. Just 44 seconds later, it was senior
Julian Ward who closed out the scoring for the Nittany Lions. Ward's tally made the final scoreline 5-1, and also brought him back into a tie for the scoring lead on the squad so far this season.
With the victory, Penn State Abington moves to a fantastic 6-0 record on the season. The Nittany Lions get the weekend off before heading back into arguably the make-or-break portion of the season. It opens with a Monday night faceoff against Lancaster Bible, a makeup game from the “stormed out” match scheduled earlier this month. The Blue and White then hit the road for another crucial weekend in New York against Cazenovia and Morrisville State, both top-five squads in the NEAC.
