Men’s Soccer Rallies for A 2-2 Tie

Box Score FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. – Down one goal with less than 20 minutes left in regulation, the Penn State Abington men's soccer team rallied to equalize a late goal to come away with a hard fought 2-2 tie against Keuka College (6-6-2, 1-5-1) on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions out-shot the Storm 31-10 in the 110 minutes of the game to remain unbeaten in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, posting a 9-0-2 record in conference play, earning two ties in the past two days.

Abington jumped out hard from the moment the whistle blew, posting six shots against Keuka's keeper, Willie Romero, in the first ten minutes of the opening half. Romero managed to keep the Storm in contention after coming up with four saves in the process. Keuka then found a rare opportunity during the 34th minute of the first half after Austin Gerber played a through ball inside the box towards teamamte Leandro Curran, who then scored into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Abington shifted their tactics and began attacking more aggressively and in the 41st minute it paid off as freshman Victor Molina slipped the ball through two defenders to connect with junior Alex Martins for a breakaway towards the box to chip it pass Romero for the equalizer.

The clock winded down in the final five minutes of the first half as neither team could find a scoring opportunity as the game remained tied at the half.

After both teams adjusted their strategies at the half, the second stanza had both teams maintaining control and possession of the ball rather than taking any unnecessary shots and giving away the ball. For Keuka, the patience took notice during the 49th minute as midfielder Matt Hey passed the ball up toward the right sideline, finding Gerber open on the wing to finish the play with a hard shot into the top left corner of the goal for the 2-1 lead for the Storm.

Abington began to strike back hard in the remainder of the second half, collecting eight corner kicks in regulation, but Keuka's defense held the line, catching the Nittany Lions offside twice. With less than 20 minutes to play, Abington finally broke through in the 74th minute after a blocked shot by Martins had the ball trickled in front of Marco Paparo, who then chipped in an empty netter for his 10th goal of the season, to tie up the game.

As time winded down, the game went into double overtime as Abington outshot the Storm 7-1 and had four corner kicks opportunities but Keuka's defense managed to thwart every potential scoring opportunities for the Nittany Lions as the game ended in a stalemate.

With one week of the regular season to play, Abington still holds the number one seed in the NEAC for now. While the Nittany Lions have completed conference play, they now wait until all eight teams in the conference completes the competition next week to determine whether they host the championship or not. In the meantime, the Nittany Lions will return to action in two weeks as they travel to St. Davids, Pa. to take on Eastern University in a non-conference matchup on October 28th.
