Men's Soccer Continues to Roll in 8-1 Win over Cazenovia

Nittany Lions stay undefeated in NEAC, sit atop conference leaderboard

Box Score Fort Washington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer squad added some heat of their own to an already warm October afternoon, scoring eight goals against a solid Cazenovia Wildcats squad to take home an 8-1 victory. Three different Nittany Lions netted a pair of goals apiece, and in one twenty-minute span, the Blue and White scored six of their eight goals.

Penn State Abington (9-2, 5-0 NEAC) got their potent offense going early on in the match, netting their first goal just under nine minutes in. After a Cazenovia foul about 25 yards away from their goal, Nittany Lions defender Phil Curry stood over the ball. The solid senior sent the free kick curling around the right side of the wall in front of him and snuck it in between the diving Wildcats keeper and the right post for a spectacular goal, putting Penn State Abington up 1-0. The hosts would tack on another goal just seven minutes later off the foot of Marco Paparo. The Nittany Lions' senior goal scoring leader got on the other end of a cross from freshman Daniel Ortiz and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to put the Blue and White up 2-0 just over fifteen minutes in. However, from this point on in the first half, the Cazenovia (3-8, 3-3 NEAC) defense bowed up. The Wildcats allowed 18 shots in the half, but their defense and junior goalkeeper Andrew Schultz held the Nittany Lions scoreless over the remainder of the match, with Schultz making 9 of his 16 total saves in the half.

The second half was where Penn State Abington truly did their damage. Over a powerful twenty-minute span, the Nittany Lions poured in their six other goals, stalled only momentarily by a Cazenovia goal snuck into the midst of them. Paparo started things off with his second goal of the day off a rebound. Ortiz continued to cause the Wildcats defense problems, taking a shot from the right side of the box that Schultz was able to parry away. However, ball landed right at the feet of Paparo, who was crashing the box, and it was a simple flick into the net to give the lanky senior his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Just 39 seconds later it became a 4-0 lead, when Alex Martins volleyed a cross into the net from Gustavo Alegria on the right side for his first goal of the day. A few minutes later, Martins struck again, this time on some great individual work. He took a pass from Paparo in the midfield and dribbled along the left sideline towards the penalty box. Martins then cut swiftly to his right towards the center of the box before letting a low lined shot back towards the left side of the goal and in. Only a few minutes into the half, the game had turned into a 5-0 drubbing.

Cazenovia's Kyle Severance got a goal against the run of play for the visitors in the 58th minute, but it simply was not enough to slow down the Penn State Abington train. Alix Edwards got his first goal of the season for the Nittany Lions off a cross from Wellay Asifuah, and then completed his double just a few minutes later with a blast just inside the penalty box. Jose Giron closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute with his sixth of the year on an assist from Edwards. When the scoreboard finally ticked down to 00:00, the Nittany Lions took home an impressive 8-1 victory.

With the win, the Blue and White move their record to 9-2 and, more importantly, stay undefeated in the North Eastern Athletic Conference with a 5-0 record. The Nittany Lions now sit atop the NEAC standings with 15 points on the season, and the team has already played and defeated the next three teams behind them on the leaderboard. Penn State Abington will take that 5-0 NEAC record on the road to Lancaster Bible College for their next match on Wednesday afternoon.
